Scroll down for links to some sites and blogs that I like:
Cycling
Dave McCraw’s Cycling Blog. This blog is an entertaining read with some crunchy commentary, but the real value is in the reviews of kit (tyres, lights etc). It’s nice to see some evidence-based information about, e.g., the relative importance of rolling resistance compared to weight. Alas it seems to have gone silent.
Stonehenge Cycles. Salisbury is fortunate to have a great full service bike shop. Friendly staff, great range of products and Campagnolo-certified mechanics.
PAC Tours. The masters of long distance cycling. Run by Lon Haldeman, the first man to win the solo Race Across America, and Susan Notorangelo, the first winner of the womens’ race, PAC Tours specializes in running supported rides at the deep end of the distance range. Before I hang up my cleats I will ride the Southern Transcontinental (San Diego to the Georgia coast in 27 days), but I have attended two of their spring training camps and have nothing but praise for their operation. It’s a slick well oiled machine and their prices are very reasonable.
Birds
The Army Ornithological Society. The AOS is an association of military birders from the UK and Commonwealth. This site includes a message board, a list of upcoming events, trip reports, a blog and information on the society’s conservation activities on Ascension Island.
The Internet Bird Collection. A treasure trove of information on the birds of the world. Useful for hard-core birding tasks like updating your species list, checking for splits etc.
Kingston Field Naturalists. The home club.
Birding Tours Colombia. In my opinion, the top birding tour company in the birding mecca that is Colombia. They specialize in small group or private tours targeting endemic species. Highly recommended.
Eastern Ontario Birding. Jon Ruddy is an Ottawa-based birding guide specializing in Southern Ontario. His bird-finding skills and bird knowledge are outstanding. Highly recommended.
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats
3DownNation is the go-to site for all the latest news and views about the Canadian Football League. For those who bleed black and gold this is essential reading.
Other Good Things
Nakturalik.
Some fine photography by my bro.
